An eighteenth century Scottish poet wrote concerning war: “Rash, fruitless war, from wanton glory waged, is only splendid murder.”

An older preacher used this quotation when he wrote concerning a particularly brutal doctrinal attack on another elderly preacher by a group of younger, treacherous preachers. While many controversies among Christians and churches aren't this vicious, many Christians and congregations simply don't know how to navigate personal and doctrinal clashes, and thus, do more harm than good. Such situations expose some noble and naïve souls to some pretty treacherous Christians. Yet, many Christians consent to much worse than Saul did at Stephen's stoning while “consenting to his death” by just holding the coats of the stone-throwers. Most members, whose jobs aren't even on the line, refuse to ratchet up their courage to be bothered by congregational problems and decisions. They may just want difficulties handled by the congregational leaders so they can avoid being involved. Consequently, many Christians go blithely on, consenting through ignorance to mistreatment of others that goes on behind the scenes.

Many congregations stagnate and don't grow in their knowledge of God and the Bible because of an inability to study controversial subjects together. They fear that if challenging subjects are broached, their members will descend into an ugliness that will overwhelm or split the church. Thus, they often refuse to deal openly with disagreements. Such actions often discourage the most studious and brightest members to the point that many leave or simply give up on associating with a congregation. Rather than controversies being a terrible thing that congregations should avoid at all costs, this book shows that God has a plan for dealing with problems that helps congregations grow, increases faith and confidence in God, and builds bonds between brethren.

This book is for independent Bible students.
It is NOT for you if:

  • You're not a serious student of the Bible
  • You feel threatened by people who study their Bibles
  • Your concept of Bible study is listening to your teacher go through a quarterly class book
  • Your concept of being a Christian consists mainly of "going to church"
  • You depend on the preacher to do your studying for you
  • You're in a denomination where all the thinking is done at the top
  • You're an elder or preacher who is afraid for the congregation to study controversial subjects

Ideal for: Individual Study, Preaching, Elders,
Adult Classes, New Converts, Gifts

Introduction

Chapter 1: Formality vs. Humanity: When God Despises Scriptural Worship (free chapter) emphasizes the Scriptures' relative importance of proper treatment of our fellowman over our formal religious service. This is an important principle for people who, in their defense of doctrine, think they can ride roughshod over brethren they may think are mistaken. Prominent Jews of Jesus' day were the conservatives of their time. They placed a great deal of importance on doctrinal correctness and formal religious service. Jesus taught that their misdirected emphasis was a real danger for them. For conservative people of our age, the danger can be no less.

Chapter 2: Dealing with Doctrinal Differences (free chapter) is reproduced from Fellowship: With God and His People, The Way of Christ Without Denominationalism, and arises naturally from the fact that in a local church, Christians from many different religious and secular backgrounds, need to develop some skills in dealing with their differences in order to be able to work together. This chapter begins the development of those skills.
We Naturally Expect Lions and Lambs to Have Problems
Solving Problems Together Builds Bonds Between Brethren
Is the Restoration Over?
Bible Study vs. Creed Rehearsal
Unless We Learn Some Lessons, We're Doomed to Undergo Splits

What About I Cor. 1.10 and II John 9?
What Can We Differ On and Still Be in Fellowship?
Principles for Solving Problems
Maintain the Independence of Local Congregations
Know the Difference Between Contending and Being Contentious
Chapter 3: How Churches Make Controversial Decisions discusses the responsibilities of both local churches and individual Christians in determining their collective action. We describe the immediate “bind” that both sides get themselves into when, rather than striving to study their differences together, they make bold statements of what they can and cannot live with. This inevitably brings about immediate splits in fellowship, that, if they had the proper skills in dealing with such differences, the breaks in fellowship perhaps would have been entirely unnecessary.
What Is a Local Church?
Holt's Position Concerning a Local Church
Two Fundamental Principles
Three Classes of Controversies
Sample Application: Shall a Local Church Forbid Women from Speaking in Congregational Meetings?
Conclusion
Chapter 4: Jesus vs. Codependent Christians deals with an extremely practical Bible subject. Codependence affects every Christian in every relationship with other people: spouse, children, parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, fellow-Christians, fellow-workers, and also in the political realm. An understanding of codependence is badly needed in our society, and is especially needed among the Lord's people who are often some of the most codependent people around. A failure to deal with codependent Christians often keeps congregations from being truly self-ruling, and Christians from living by faith.

Chapter 5: Women and Men in a Local Church (free chapter) deals with the role of women in a local congregation, particularly in cases of congregational controversy. It may also serve as an application of the principles set forth in the previous four chapters.

What People Say

Reviewers
Great stuff, Sam. It really addresses the issue well. Can't begin to tell you how much it means to me just now with some of the issues I'm facing. Well anyway, get this puppy to the presses, it looks like a winner. (Texas Preacher)
I just finished your book and am excited for myself as well as for the folks to whom I intend to give this book. (Texas Christian who purchased 12 copies)
I want to purchase a copy of Sam's book Controversy as I want to review it and make a presentation to a group of Christians….As with all congregations, we have problems and issues to deal with and often it revolves around what I call "ultratraditonal" thinking without thinking things through as to the reason we call ourselves disciples of Christ. Knowing Sam, I am sure the book can help me work on the attitudes. (Georgia Bible-class teacher)
Codependence
The information on codependence was a real eye-opener for me, and when I gave my friend just Sam's definition of "codependence," it REALLY helped her a lot! God is wonderful, isn't He! He really does give us everything for life and godliness! Thanks! (Texas Christian)
I read your new book on Controversy ... very good ... And you are exactly right re intimidation of preachers, etc ... It's about time someone called their hand on this type of conduct…Thanks again for your work and your courage to stand up to the bullies... I am an elder and I've got a feeling that I will be using your Controversy book soon enough re MDR... (Alabama elder)
Accountability. On this concept, or more precisely, on the lack of accountability, crumble many lives that otherwise could be good and decent, even productive. Jesus set a high standard of letting people be accountable for their conduct and choices, even to the point of letting them feel the full force of the consequences of their attitudes and actions. And for precisely this reason, Jesus' call is an upward call, for one becomes better--and allow others to become better--only when one takes full responsibility for his life. Jesus knew, and by his actions taught us, that shielding people from their consequences only crippled them; but that demanding them to be responsible was the only way to really help them. It expresses genuine love. In this work, Samuel G. Dawson deals squarely, thoroughly and forth-rightly with the problems generated by codependency. He examines the teachings and actions of Jesus to formulate a foundation for dealing with people who make harmful or sinful choices. This is must read material for everyone; but especially for anyone who finds himself "excusing" or "covering up for" the actions (or, inactions) of someone in his life. (Washington Preacher)
